What we make

Four kinds of work

Upright monuments

A die set on a base at the head of the grave, readable standing up. It holds the most lettering and the most design.

Granite. Single or companion width.

Flat and slant markers

Set flush with the ground or angled low toward the reader. Most lawn sections require one of these two.

Foundations and setting

We file the cemetery paperwork, pour or set the foundation to their specification, and install the memorial. You do not have to arrange it.

How it goes

Five steps, in this order

Two of these are yours to decide. Three of them are ours to carry. Nothing moves to the next step until you have seen and approved the one before it.

  1. You decide

    Talk it through

    We meet in the shop or at the graveside. Bring the names and dates as you want them to read, and the name of the cemetery if you know it. If you do not know it yet, that is fine, and we will find it.

  2. We handle

    Cemetery rules

    Every cemetery, and often every section within one, limits what is allowed: size, material, finish, whether an upright is permitted at all. We get those rules in writing before you choose anything, so nothing you pick gets turned down later.

  3. You decide

    Shape, stone, lettering, finish

    You choose the stone and its color, the shape of the top, the polish on each face, the lettering, and any engraved imagery. We draw it to scale and send it to you. You read every letter and every date before we cut anything.

  4. We handle

    Cutting and engraving

    The stone is cut, shaped, polished, and lettered in the shop. Work starts only after you have signed the drawing, and the drawing is what we cut.

  5. We handle

    Foundation and setting

    We set the foundation to the cemetery’s specification, install the memorial, and tell you the date it went in. If weather or ground conditions move that date, we tell you before it moves, not after.

The stone

What we cut

Granite is graded by grain as much as by color. A fine, even grain takes small lettering cleanly. A coarse grain reads better at size and from a distance.

  • Barre Gray

    Vermont granite, light to mid gray. Fine and even. The most common choice in this area and the most forgiving for small lettering.

  • Georgia Gray

    Warmer and more mottled than Barre, quarried closer to here. Holds up well at larger sizes where the grain has room to read.

  • Jet Black

    Near uniform, no visible grain, mirror polish. The highest contrast for laser etching and portrait work. Shows dust and handprints.

  • Mahogany

    Deep red-brown with coarse feldspar flecks. Warm in daylight and it keeps its color. Best on larger uprights.

  • Bahama Blue

    Blue-gray with brown flecks through it. Cooler than the grays and it shifts noticeably between overcast and full sun.

The panels above are grain renderings, not color samples. A screen cannot show you what granite does in daylight, so we bring real stock samples to the first meeting and, where we can, we walk the section with you and show you stones already set.
